Essence Restaurant Group became a Certified B Corporation in 2016.

B Corps are a new type of company that uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Corp certification is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to dairy.

Essence was certified by the non-profit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. As a restaurant group driven by passion, servant leadership, and exceptional dining experiences, we believe that pursuing B Corporation certification just made sense. During the certification process, we took a deep look into how our practices impact our employees, our community, the environment, and our customers.

Today, there are over 2,000 Certified B Corps around the globe, including Cascade Engineering, Patagonia, and Brewery Vivant. We are proud to join them in redefining success in business so that one day everyone uses business as a force for good. To learn more about our certification, check out our B Corp profile.

What makes us sustainable?

  • We recycle and compost all our waste: paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and grease, netting one tenth that of a typical restaurant.
  • We use dye-free paper products and limit their use.
  • We print all our promotional materials on 100% PCW content paper.
  • We were the first farm-to-plate restaurant in West Michigan, now celebrating decades of strong partnerships with local farmers and artisans.
  • Sustainable procurement is our cornerstone: We support farmers who ensure the land’s use for generations to come.
